New in Georgia This Winter
Georgia was chosen to host FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships 2023. About 25 medal events planned for next years in Gudauri and Bakuriani which needs investments and renovation of Georgia’s ski resorts infrastructure. 2018 year is one of most remarkable years in terms of development for Gudauri ski resort. Resort is celebrating it’s 30 year anniversary. Government investments in ski resorts are taking country’s ski potential on higher positions. Ski resorts are receiving significant investments each year taking Georgia’s mountain and adventure travel industry to top level. At least one brand new ski lift is built in Georgia each year. From higher, faster and bigger top-of-the-notch ski lifts to new hotels and flights, here are some 2018/19 winter season highlight.
Gudauri-Kobi is ready to transport 2,800 passengers per hour. Three brand new French POMA ski lift with SIGMA “Diamon 10” cabins with total length of 7+ km.
Connecting Gudauri with Kobi was very important for further development and growth of Gudauri ski resort.
New ski lift system will not only serve skiers who are full in love to ski in Kobi area, but also for transit. Due to hard snowfalls Kobi pass is closing for some times in hard winter days and new ski lift will allow people to move from Stephantsminda (Kazbegi) side to Gudauri.Kobi’s southern slopes will prolong Georgia’s ski season.
All ski lifts are expected to be open in beginning of December 2018.
Total cost of project: 80+ mln GEL.
Gudauri ski lift renovation. Another step forward in modernizing Gudauri’s young infrastructure. Three Doppelmayr’s iconic lifts built back in 1988 are replaced with brand new 6-seater detachable chairlift. After renovating Gudauri’s old lift system, capacity of passengers carrying will significantly increase and crowds at stations are expected to decrease.
Pirveli (first lift) will be replaced with 6-seater detachable chairlift.
Soliko (second lift) 6-seater detachable chairlift with bubbles.
Kudebi (third lift) 6-seater detachable chairlift with bubbles.
Water Supply and Artificial Snow: Gudauri is on it’s phase II for artificial snow making system. Project is about to cover second ski line with artificial snow to start season earlier and have a guaranteed snow for season openings and guests. Mountain Development Company signed contract with Italian TechnoAlpine for latest and best models of 78 pcs lance and 3 fan gun’s. Total project cost: 2+ mln EUR
Gudauri also will have 24 hour continuously water supply after building big artificial lake next to new ski lift near Kobi. Project total cost: 11+ mln GEL
European Investment Bank (EIB) , European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other donor organizations are helping Georgia to increase traffic and safety on Georgian roads. In recent years Bakuriani had big problems with traffic jams during winter season. To solve this problem Municipal Development Fund started new Bakuriani road bypass construction with total value of 7.5 mln GEL. Project is about finish in spring 2019. New road will connect Borjomi – Bakuriani – Akhaltiske and Bakuriani – Andzeiti – Tsikhisdziri.
Georgian historical and one of most beautiful military road also gets some updates. Georgian military road is connecting Georgia with Russia. Since 1950 year Georgian road department first time finish project of 1,7 km tunnel, this tunnel will prevent natural hazard risks near Georgian – Russian border, in recent year gorge was closed few times due landslides. Project cost was about 51+ mln GEL.
22.7 new road with 6 bridges and 5 tunnels in total, including 9km of new tunnel will be made from Kvesheti to Kobi pass to decrease traffic jams created by big cargo trucks going from Georgia to Russia and vice-versa.
The World Championship is Coming
Georgia is about to host FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships in 2023. Georgia has big chance to showcase it’s rich and unique hospitality for World Championship and Events which country will host before 2023. In 2019 Gudauri will host European Cup – FIS Snowboard Cross Championship for both ladies and man. Event will take place in 8-10 March.
Electing Georgia as the host of the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships shows the far reach and global appeal of the sport, said Kasper.
